Article reports that ceremonies were held on the 7 August 2009 on both sides of the line that separates Georgia from South Ossetia, its separatist region, to mark the first anniversary of the Georgia-Russia war.

One year on, Georgia is said to be faring markedly better than the South Ossetian and Abkhazian regions that Russia chose to recognise as independent states.

One year on thousands of civilians from both sides are still unable to return to their homes, said Amnesty International as it published a new report documenting the effects of the week-long conflict.
