The head of Germany's armed forces Wolfgang Schneiderhan tendered his resignation on the 26 November 2009. The move comes after media reported that the government may have withheld information about a deadly attack that killed numerous civilians in Afghanistan in September 2009.

The controversy will no doubt feed public scepticism about Germany’s role in the Nato mission in Afghanistan, as well as about anti-terrorism and peacekeeping missions it is supporting off the coasts of Somalia and Lebanon.

Angela Merkel’s new government was dealt a further blow on the 27 November 2009 after Franz Josef Jung, defence minister in the German chancellor’s previous government, resigned his new portfolio as labour minister.
