German politicians from across the political spectrum condemned violence against refugees on the 23 August 2015 after a second night of far-right riots outside an asylum-seeker home in the town of Heidenau in the eastern German state of Saxony.

In view of the riots and increasing attacks on refugee shelters in Germany, a police union warned of growing right-wing terrorism in the country.

'The combination of politicians without a definite plan and massive streams of refugees to Germany and within Europe is the ideal breeding ground for strong right-wing extremism in Germany', said Rainer Wendt, chairman of the German Police Union.

On the 24 August 2015 Chancellor Merkel's spokesman Steffen Seibert said Berlin would not stand for hostility against the newcomers.

'The Chancellor and the entire government condemn the violent rampages and the aggressively xenophobic atmosphere in the strongest terms', Seibert told reporters, using his strongest language to date to address the wave of anti-refugee violence in Germany.

Chancellor Angela Merkel urged Germans to take a stand against 'shameful' anti-migrant protests, on a visit to an asylum shelter on the 26 August 2015, which had been the focus of clashes the previous weekend.

Facebook accepted an invitation on the 27 August 2015 from Germany's justice minister to discuss doing more to purge the social network of racist posts after widespread complaints from users.
