Article discusses the challenges facing François Hollande following his victory in the French Presidential Election on the 6 May 2012.

With France at the centre of Europe’s struggle against crushing sovereign debt and feeble growth, Mr Hollande would have little room for manoeuvre as he crafted a government and set out to win the June 2012 national assembly elections.

Satisfying both the expectations of his party and its leftist allies – to whom he had promised an alternative to austerity – and the demands for fiscal rectitude from Angela Merkel, the German chancellor, and the financial markets, would require considerable political adroitness.

Mr Hollande took his first step on to the European stage on the 9 May 2012, meeting Herman Van Rompuy, President of the European Council in Brussels, to discuss his demands for a growth package.
