Hungary's prime minister office confirmed on 3 May 2016 that the country would hold a referendum on whether to accept any future European Union quota system for resettling refugees in September or early October 2016. The Hungarian supreme court gave the green light for a national referendum in which the country’s government will campaign for the rejection of the EU plan to resettle asylum seekers. President Janos Ader of Hungary announced on the 5 July 2016 that the referendum would be held on the 2 October 2016. The question asked would be 'Do you want the European Union to be entitled to prescribe the mandatory settlement of non-Hungarian citizens in Hungary without the consent of parliament?'. |
