EurActiv and other news sources reported that the anti-EU UK Independence Party (UKIP) won its first elected seat in the UK national parliament (House of Commons) in a by-election on the 9 October 2014. UKIP also came a close second in another vote, proving, EurActiv suggested, that it posed a threat to the country's two main parties in a UK general election in 2015. A Guardian/ICM opinion poll taken just after the election showed a further surge of support for UKIP. |
