Informal agreement between EU institutions on proposal regarding a visa suspension mechanism

The European Parliament reached an informal agreement on 8 December 2016 with the remaining EU institutions regarding a draft proposal on a visa suspension mechanism.

According to the Parliament's rapporteur, the agreed changes allow for a quicker activation of the suspension mechanism and facilitate the consideration of ongoing proposals on visa liberalisation.

The proposal was originally released by the European Commission in May. The Council of the European Union agreed its negotiating position shortly afterwards. The Parliament did the same in July.
