Iran: Declaration by the High Representative on behalf of the EU on the one year anniversary of the JCPOA

The EU's High Representative for Foreign Policy, Federica Mogherini, made a declaration on 14 July 2016 on the occasion of the first anniversary of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

The European Union reaffirmed its commitment to further developing its relations with Iran, in particular in areas such as trade, energy, human rights, civil nuclear cooperation, migration and environment, amongst others.

The landmark deal was implemented on the 16 January and on the same day a comprehensive Information Note on the lifting of economic and financial nuclear-related sanctions was issued to deliver benefits to the both parties. Ever since, efforts were made to develop relations between the EU and Iran, but concerns remained over the country's human rights record.
