The European Union's High Representative for Foreign Policy congratulated Mr Rouhani on his re-election via Twitter and wished to continue working towards the full implementation of the nuclear agreement signed by Iran. Some analysts argued that the Supreme Leader and conservative candidates in this election played on old fears of international interference in an attempt to see off reform in the country.

Iran held a presidential election on 19 May 2017, the twelfth such election in the country. Local elections were held simultaneously.

Incumbent President Hassan Rouhani was re-elected for a second term, having won 23.5 of 41 million votes counted, according to the Interior Ministry.
