Article reported that the Irish government faced intense pressure to hold a referendum on the proposed eurozone fiscal treaty after the results of an opinion poll released on the 29 January 2012 showed almost three quarters of the public wanted a vote on the agreement.

European Union leaders were expected to agree on the final text of the fiscal treaty at an informal European Council summit meeting in Brussels on the 30 January 2012.
