Italy’s austerity budget gains approval

Italy’s three-year austerity package designed to eliminate the budget deficit by 2014 approved by Giorgio Napolitano, head of state, on the 6 July 2011 after Silvio Berlusconi backed down amid a storm of protest and withdrew a provision that would have allowed his media empire to delay payment of €750m in court damages.
