Jean-Claude Juncker, the European Commission president, announced during an interview in February 2017 his decision not to seek a second mandate in the office.

During the interview, Mr Juncker also shared his fears that the challenges facing the European Union, in particular the Brexit process, could fundamentally divide member states. He argued his role was to recreate consensus on fundamental EU issues.
