Juncker: NATO is not enough, EU needs an army

Reports of an interview given by European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker to German newspaper Welt am Sonntag on the 8 March 2015.

Mr Juncker said that the European Union needed its own army to help address the problem that it was not 'taken entirely seriously' by Russia and others as an international force.

However, a United Kingdom government spokesman said: 'Our position is crystal clear that defence is a national – not an EU – responsibility and that there is no prospect of that position changing and no prospect of a European army'.
