Liberals back Verhofstadt to succeed Barroso

Former Belgian Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt was confirmed as the candidate of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe for President of the European Commission, ahead of the European Parliament elections in May 2014.

The liberal candidate set out his stall to be the next European Commission President on the 25 April 2014 by demanding a "decisive step in the European integration as the fuel for new growth in Europe".
