The European Commission announced on the 28 November 2014 that the European Union expected the UN climate change conference on 1-12 December 2014 in Lima, Peru, to pave the way for the adoption of a new, legally binding, global climate agreement in Paris in 2015. The EU was confident that the new agreement would significantly strengthen and broaden collective international efforts to tackle climate change. The 40% greenhouse gas reduction target agreed by EU leaders in October, together with the announcement by the US and China on their future targets that followed, were clear evidence of global resolve.
