French President Emmanuel Macron has a strong European vision for a reformed and re-energised European Union, which he outlined in a speech 'Initiative pour l’Europe: Une Europe souveraine, unie, démocratique' (Initiative for Europe: A sovereign, united, democratic Europe) at the Sorbonne University, Paris on 26 September 2017. To make this ambitious vision become a reality was a challenge - President Macron realised he needed the support of the German government. In addition, he would need further support from within the EU Institutions and this article focuses on a strategy for building up a strong pro-EU grouping within the European Parliament after the 2019 EP elections. The article suggested that a young French National Assembly member from the pro-Macron group En Marche, Pieyre-Alexandre Anglade, was working on a strategy to achieve this in Brussels. President Macron gave a speech to the European Parliament on the 17 April 2018 in which he laid out his vision for the future of the European Union. This was part of a series of presentations by EU Member State Heads of Government to the European Parliament under the theme of the Future of Europe during 2018. |
