Report from a meeting of the Joint Ministerial Committee held in Cardiff on the 30 January 2017. It was attended by United Kingdom Prime Minister Theresa May as a sign of the government’s commitment to engage with the devolved administrations and to seek a Brexit that worked for the whole of the UK.

Also attending were the Secretary of State for Exiting the EU, the Secretary of State for International Trade, the Secretaries of State for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland and the Minister for the Cabinet Office and the chief ministers from the devolved administrations of Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

The Guardian suggested that Theresa May would make it clear to the leaders of the devolved administrations that they could not have a veto over the Brexit process.

Both the governments of Scotland and Wales had earlier produced proposals for how they wished the future relationship between their countries and the European Union.

Following the meeting Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said 'The Prime Minister must be true to her word and act immediately to intensify work on the Scottish Government’ s proposals to remain in the European Single Market before Article 50 is triggered'.

She went on to say: 'It is also increasingly clear that Brexit must result in a fundamental reconsideration of where power lies in the UK. It will not be sufficient to simply give back to Scotland the powers that are already ours, we must see a clear indication from the UK Government that there will be a major transfer of powers to the Scottish Parliament once the UK leaves the EU'.
