The members of the European Parliament's Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety (ENVI) voted on 29 January 2015 on a draft motion for a resolution on the European Union's alcohol strategy. The resolution was then adopted on 31 March 2015.

In 2006, the European Commission had published a strategy to help member-states tackle alcohol-related harm. However, it was not updated in 2013 as it was originally intended.
