Merkel announces fourth term candidacy

Chancellor Angela Merkel announced on the 20 November 2016 that she would stand in the 2017 federal elections in Germany for a fourth term. She made the announcement in Berlin following discussions with CDU colleagues.

She said 'This election will be difficult like no other before it ... We will be grappling with challenges from all sides, from the right as never before and from a strong polarisation of our society'.
