Report of a FT interview with Peter Altmaier, the chief whip of Angela Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union in the German Bundestag, September 2011. As Chief Whip he has the responsibility to persuade potential rebels in the CDU to vote on the 29 September 2011 for the latest crisis measures to rescue Germany’s debt-laden partners in Europe’s monetary union.

The vote, on 29 September, would be the first of three that will test support amongst German conservatives for the eurozone rescue measures. In October 2011, they must approve a new Greek rescue package, and in December 2011, the treaty to set up a permanent eurozone crisis management fund.
