Article reports that Chancellor Angela Merkel would give the German banking supervisor, BAFIN, powers to dismiss the management of failing banks and suspend shareholders’ rights if re-elected chancellor in September 2009, according to legislation drafted by her economics minister.

The text, a copy of which was obtained by the Financial Times on the 6 August 2009, would give BAFIN sweeping powers to fire managers and restructure systemically relevant banks that are threatened with insolvency.
