Against the background of constant turmoil in the financial markets, and a cacophony of commentators warning of doom, the German parliament will vote on the 29 September 2011 on the latest package of crisis measures to defend the euro.

This vote is only the first of several on the euro crisis. The Bundestag will have to approve the next Greek rescue programme in October 2011, and a treaty to establish the permanent European stability mechanism (ESM) to replace the EFSF, early in 2012.
