The Communication identifies three main areas where further action from the European Union is needed:

+ to develop the European Data Economy to its full potential;
+ to protect Europe's assets by tackling cybsersecurity challenges;
+ to promote the online platforms as responsible player of a fair internet ecosystem.

The document also takes stock of the progress made, calls on co-legislators to swiftly act on all proposals already presented, and outlines further actions.The European Commission published on 10 May 2017 the mid-term review of its Digital Single Market Strategy.

The strategy was first adopted in May 2015 showcasing its main areas of action. Since then, dozens of policy initiatives and legislative proposals were put forward in the framework of the Digital Single Market.
