Monti pledges fairness in Italian sacrifices

Mario Monti, Italy’s newly appointed prime minister, laid out the programme of his government of unelected technocrats in his first speech to parliament on the 17 November 2011. Mr Monti focused on the need to relaunch the economy while promising fairness in implementing painful measures.
