The French Labour Ministry announced on the 27 April 2015 that the number of unemployed in France hit a new record in March 2015 at 3.51m, up 0.4% from the previous month, with young people especially hard hit.

President Hollande had promised that he won't seek re-election unless unemployment has fallen by the time the 2017 presidential election takes place.

Separately, President Hollande announced a new volunteer military service (SMV) for marginalised youths, in a bid to help them increase their employment potential. Participants will learn basic skills such as punctuality and politeness.
