Oettinger: EU may not help Russia develop Arctic oil, gas

EU Energy Commissioner Günther Oettinger said on the 23 July 2014 that the European Union should not give Russia technical help to develop Arctic oil and gas fields if Moscow failed to help to defuse the Ukraine crisis.

The statement was provided one day after a Foreign Affairs Council meeting which discussed further sanctions against Russia. At this point of the crisis, the energy sector was seen as a critical item of debate within the EU.
