The United Kingdom Prime Minister David Cameron gave a statement in the House of Commons on the 29 June 2016 on the first day of the European Council in Brussels, 28-29 June 2016.

This was the first Council since Britain decided to leave the European Union. The decision was accepted and Mr Cameron said that there was a constructive discussion about how to ensure a strong relationship between Britain and the countries of the EU in the future.

But the decisions for the future, including the triggering of Article 50 – were rightly for the next Prime Minister and the European Council clearly understood and respected that.
