Cash-strapped countries in central Europe are rowing back on pension reforms to keep public debt under control because of the refusal of the European Union to take the changes into account when calculating debt levels.

Nine EU countries, mainly drawn from the former eastern bloc, are demanding a change in public accounting rule.
