Populist surge puts first woman in charge of Rome

Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi suffered a political setback after the second round of municipal elections in Italy on the 19 June 2016. Candidates from the populist and Eurosceptic Five Star Movement (M5S) won the elections to become the mayors of Rome and Turin, two traditional strongholds of Renzi's Democratic Party (PD).
