The moderate centre-left Socialist Party in Portugal in an agreement with the smaller Communist Party and the radical Left Bloc used a parliamentary vote on policy to force the newly sworn-in government led by Pedro Passos Coelho following the 4 October General Election to resign on the 10 November 2015, after only eleven days.

Following the resignation of the centre-right government, the country's president Anibal Cavaco Silva called in for meetings several political and economic stakeholders, followed by meetings with the political parties. Although it seemed clear a centre-left government would follow, Mr Cavaco Silva asked for further reassurance regarding the stability of the parliament majority and suitability of the agreements between the Socialist party and other leftist parties.
