Press Release: EU increases humanitarian aid for Burundi refugees

On 30 July 2015, the European Commission released €4.5 million in humanitarian assistance to help the increasing number of refugees from Burundi that had fled to neighbouring countries.

Following the announcement on 25 April 2015 that President Pierre Nkurunziza would seek a third mandate, provoking serious political division, Burundi underwent a sustained political and security crisis. More than 175 000 people, the majority of them women and children, were estimated to have already left the country.
