The Council of the European Union decided on 27 February 2017 to prolong sanctions against Belarus for one year, comprising an arms embargo and restrictive measures against four individuals.

The set of conclusions states that respect for universal fundamental freedoms, rule of law and human rights remained key for the shaping of the EU policy towards Belarus. In February 2016, the Council had decided to lift most sanctions against the country due to improving relations between the two sides.
