Feature reported that a group of German lawyers and politicians was assembling a case in the autumn of 2013 that could make the far-right populist National Democratic Party history. But the German secret service's long history of infiltrating the party could scuttle their arguments.

If the process was successful, it would be the first time in over a half-century that a political party had been banned in Germany. The NPD would be banned from the German state parliaments in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Saxony.

Spiegel Online International reported on 19 December 2013 that around one-quarter of the leadership of Germany's extremist National Democratic Party had been convicted of a crime, adding fuel to the national debate over whether to ban the party.
