Russia leverages its gas, cash supremacy in Ukraine

On 3 December 2013 Ukraine’s struggling gas company Naftogaz said that it had agreed with Russia’s Gazprom to defer payments for gas deliveries to spring 2014.

The agreement came 3 weeks after Ukraine announced that it would stop buying Russian gas until the end of 2013, in response of Gazprom's warning to demand advance payment for the fuel in the future.
