Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said on the 8 October 2008 that Russia would complete the withdrawal of troops from the buffer zones around Georgia’s breakaway enclaves of South Ossetia and Abkhazia by midnight on the 8th, two days ahead of a deadline set under a ceasefire brokered by the European Union that ended the recent conflict. Moscow plans to keep nearly 8,000 soldiers stationed in South Ossetia and Abkhazia
