The pro-Kremlin United Russia party won 238 of 450 seats during elections on the 4 December 2011 to the State Duma, the lower house of parliament, marking a significant drop compared to 315 seats after 2007’s elections, the Central Election Committee reported early on the 5 December 2011. With votes from about 95% of polling stations counted, the ruling United Russia party had 49.67% of the vote, a far cry from the commanding two-thirds constitutional majority the party held in the State Duma for the past four years, according to the official count. Thousands of people gathered in downtown Moscow on the 5 December 2011 to protest against alleged election fraud. The rally was the largest opposition protest for years in Moscow and comes amid rising disgruntlement with the authorities. |
