Article reports that the United Kingdom, France and Germany were engaged at the European Council, Brussels, 16-17 December 2010 in clandestine efforts to secure a real-terms freeze in the European Union budget until 2020, in a move that would infuriate Poland and other poorer EU states. It was said that there was hope that up to 10 Member States would sign a letter calling for the freeze. Poland was said to be rounding up support from fellow central and eastern European countries, who are also beneficiaries of the EU budget. They also had met European Commission President Barroso to discuss their concerns. |
