Summary:

The European Commission adopted on 21 December 2016 a package of measures aimed at increasing the EU's capacity to fight the financing of terrorism and organised crime.

Further information:

The proposals deliver on the commitments made in the Action Plan on strengthening the fight against terrorist financing, which was released in February 2016. It aims to complete and reinforce the EU's legal framework in the areas of money laundering, illicit cash flows and the freezing and confiscation of assets. The proposed measures are:

+ Proposal for a Regulation on the mutual recognition of freezing and confiscation orders
+ Proposal for a Regulation on controls on cash entering or leaving the Union and repealing Regulation (EC) No 1889/2005
+ Proposal for a Directive on countering money laundering by criminal law
