Spain: Results of General Election 2011: Rajoy sweeps to record victory in Spain

Mariano Rajoy led Spain’s centre-right Popular party to the biggest election victory in its history on the 20 November 2011, consigning the incumbent Socialists to the political wilderness and making them a further casualty of the eurozone’s deepening sovereign debt crisis.

Mr Rajoy promised to govern 'for alla but warned against expecting miracles amid the tough economic situation.

The election results also gave more influence in the Spanish parliament to previously insignificant Spanish parties and to regional nationalists.
