King Felipe VI of Spain appealed for dialogue and unity in his Christmas Eve message on the 24 December 2015 after the inconclusive results of the general election held on the 20 December 2015.

The Local.es also reported that political analysts were suggesting that while Spain's Socialists held the key to the next government but whether they reached a deal with the conservatives (PP) or teamed up with the anti-austerity party Podemos, they risked losing support.

The issue of the Catalan call for a referendum on independence also complicated the issue as Podemos was the only national party in Spain which supported the call for a referendum and would demand this if they were to support a deal with any other party.

Socialist Party (PSOE) leader Pedro Sánchez said on the 28 December 2015 that while he wished to support some form of a 'shift to the Left' he was not prepared to discuss a referendum in Catalonia with Podemos.
