Rebels from Spain's ruling conservative People's Party launched a new political party on 16 January 2014, hoping to tap into public discontent over unemployment, scandals and calls for separatism in Catalonia and the Basque Country.

The ruling Popular Party (PP) kicked off its national conference on the 31 January 2014 in Valladolid with a call for unity after evident fissures within the group witnessed by the absence of former Prime Minister José María Aznar and the announcement by Jaime Mayor Oreja that he would not be standing in the May 2014 elections to the European Parliament, where he led the PP.
