EurActiv published a report on 10 September 2015 concerning the dispute between traditional taxi services and Uber, a digital platform which is part of the expanding sharing economy.

While the European Commission examines wether Uber should be regulated as a traditional service provider or as a digital platform, other relevant stakeholders try to collect allies for their cause. Uber criticised the EU for the lack of a single market for digital services, while traditional taxi services argue there is unfair competition because Uber does not pay their steep license fees and bypasses local laws.

Taxi drivers across Europe have protested against the expansion of Uber's services. That was the case in many countries like Belgium, France, Portugal and Spain.
