On the 11 September 2001 an unprecedented terrorist attack took place against a number of high profile targets in the United States of America, involving the deliberate crashing of a number of hijacked planes. At 08: 48 an American Airlines plane crashed into the north tower of the World Trade Center in New York. At 09: 03 a United Airlines plane crashed into the south tower of the World Trade Center. At 09: 40 an American Airlines plane crashed into the Pentagon in Washington, DC. At 10: 03 a further United Airlines plane crashed in Pennsylvania. Soon after, the two towers of the World Trade Center collapsed. Although final casualty figures are not yet known, it is assumed that thousands were killed and many more injured, the largest number being occupants in the two towers of the World Trade Center. In addition to American citizens the victims came from countries throughout the world, including many Europeans.

President Bush of the United States of America has vowed to hunt down and punish those responsible, and to build up support across the world to undertake this. The European Union, NATO, and many individual countries in Europe, have pledged to support the United States of America
