German Chancellor Angela Merkel met the UK Prime Minister David Cameron and her Dutch and Swedish counterparts on the 9 June 2014 in Stockholm to try to square the circle over the appointment of the next commission president ahead of the EU summit at the end of June 2014.

Mrs. Merkel restated her support for Jean-Claude Juncker to take over as president of the European Commission after the mini-summit.

On the 12 June 2014, leaders of the main political groups in the European Parliament t.old EU council chief Herman Van Rompuy to nominate Jean-Claude Juncker as the next EU commission president or face an 'institutional crisis'.

David Cameron, the United Kingdom Prime Minister published an open article on the issue of the Presidency of the European Commission on the 13 June 2014 explaining his position on the subject.
