In advance of the triggering of Article 50 on the 29 March 2017, ECFR set out in advance the red lines and potential vulnerabilities of member states to UK negotiating tactics on Brexit. There were short articles relating to: + France: The outcome of the French presidential election in May will likely change France's position on Brexit. + Germany: The truth is that neither economic nor demographic factors will exert much pressure on Germany in the course of negotiations. + Spain: Although there is no widespread desire to “punish” the UK, there is little appetite in Madrid for any exit concessions, either. + Italy: Italy's domestic economic situation makes it vulnerable to a ‘hard’ Brexit. + Poland: Warsaw is likely to play according to the Commission’s script in the negotiations. + Estonia: Estonia's concerns with the UK's contribution to the EU budget and security will provide some background to the Brexit talks. + Ireland: In both political and economic terms, Ireland is arguably the Member State most exposed to the risks of Brexit. |
