Following a report by the World Health Organisation (WHO) in which the widely-used Glyphosate was linked to cancer, environmental group Greenpeace asked for the European Union to provide a response. EU Health Commissioner Vytenis Andriukaitis considered there was no need to consider any precautionary action.

The European Commission issued an approval for glyphosate which would be up for review after the 31 December 2015.

On 15 September 2015, the European Parliament's environment, public health and food safety committee backed the extension of the use of this weedkiller.
