The President of the European Commission participated in the European Space Agency's (ESA) Council meeting in Edinburgh on 14 and 15 November 2001, where the new co-operation between the Commission and ESA was further cemented. Romano Prodi told ministers of the ESA Council that clear and specific arrangements between ESA and the Commission are needed to achieve a genuine and ambitious European Space Policy. He also suggested that such a policy should be submitted to the European Union Heads of State for political approval. Furthermore, the President confirmed that the Commission is committed to playing an active role in its partnership with ESA and will make funds available for space projects applications within its new Framework Programme for Research. Decisions on the future of flagship space applications programmes such as Galileo GALILEO and elements of the new satellite system for the global monitoring of the environment and security (GMES) initiative, as well as on the future development of the Ariane rockets and its space programmes for the coming years are expected at the ESA Council Meeting. |
