To tighten existing EU legislation on major industrial hazards, the European Commission adopted a proposal on 11 December 2001for a Directive extending the scope of the so-called Seveso II Directive. The proposal is the regulatory follow-up to the cyanide spill into the Tisza river that occurred in Baia Mare/Romania following a damburst of a tailings pond, causing considerable environmental damage, and to the fireworks explosion in Enschede/Netherlands, causing death and injury to numerous persons |
