Jail sentences for Iranian intellectuals leave EU split

On 15.1.01 European Union officials met to consider action over tough jail sentences imposed on seven intellectuals by a revolutionary court in Iran for involvement in a Berlin conference on the country's reforms. The verdicts, much harsher than expected, could undermine progress in building relations between Iran and the EU and exacerbate Tehran's internal power struggle.
