EU doubts grow over ‘switch’ in Nato role

Concerns have arisen among Nato's European members about their decision to allow the United States to invoke Article 5 - which states an armed attack against one or more of its allies is an attack against them all - if Washington can prove the recent terrorist attacks came from abroad. Concerns focus on the fact that the US 'changed' the interpretation of Article 5 in a way that fundamentally alters Nato's role. European ministers and European Union officials are due to raise the issue in talks with the Bush administration.
